On April 12th and 13th, Avoriaz will host the first Ski Joëring Criterium "Horses on Snow", a unique event combining sport, showmanship, and the special bond between humans and horses.
Ski joëring is a unique discipline that combines Nordic skiing with equestrian driving. The concept: a skier is pulled by a horse, either ridden or guided by a handler. Originating in the Nordic countries, this spectacular sport blends gliding, speed, and coordination between human and horse.
The competition takes place over two days, with two distinct types of events, each highlighting a different aspect of ski joëring.
Saturday Morning – Precision and Maneuverability Trials
Inspired by carriage driving and TREC competitions, this first round tests the dexterity, precision, and connection between the handler, the horse, and the skier. The team must complete a technical course featuring narrow gates, sharp turns, intricate slaloms, and tricky passages. Success depends on control, finesse, and smooth execution.
Sunday Morning – Gait Control, Slalom, and Speed
Let the show begin! This second round is more dynamic and delivers thrilling moments for the audience. Participants are judged on their ability to manage the horse’s gaits, execute fast-paced slaloms, and complete the course in record time. It’s the most impressive trial, blending athletic performance with adrenaline-fueled excitement.
